You Cannot Walk
on One Leg.

Saturn is fate. Jupiter is free will. People argue about which one runs a life, and the argument misses what the zodiac quietly did with them both: it turned them into a pair of legs.

Worn stone temple steps hollowed in the centre by centuries of feet, low side light
Nobody climbs a stair on one leg. The dip in the middle of each step is the argument settling itself.

01 · The Argument

An Old Question
Asked the Wrong Way.

Is it all written, or do you make your own life?

People have been arguing about this at tea shops, at funerals, and in every philosophy department on earth for as long as there have been people. One uncle says everything is already decided and there is no use struggling. Another says destiny is nothing, effort is everything, look at so and so who came from nothing.

Both of them sound convincing for about four minutes.

Jyotisha does not take a side in this argument, and that has always struck me as the most interesting thing about it. It does something stranger. It gives fate a planet, it gives free will a planet, and then it puts both of them in your legs.

02 · The Two Camps

Where Most People
End Up Standing.

It is all written

Comforting in a bleak way. Nothing is your fault, and nothing is your business either. This position never has to try.

You make your own destiny

Energising for a few years. It also has nothing to say to a person whose plans were taken from them by something they never chose.

The older answer

Both. Not as a compromise, and not as a shrug, but as anatomy. One of them is your left leg and one of them is your right.

03 · The Two Planets

Shani Carries What Is.
Guru Carries What Could Be.

Saturn is called Karma Karaka. Karma here does not mean punishment, which is how the word gets used in English. It means work, and consequence, and the weight of everything already done. Saturn is the bill that arrives. He is time, ageing, delay, discipline, the thing you did not choose and now have to carry. In everyday language, Saturn is fate.

Jupiter is called Dharma Karaka. Dharma is the direction a life is meant to take, the thing worth doing, the meaning you can choose to serve. Jupiter is faith, teaching, counsel, growth, the door standing open. In everyday language, Jupiter is free will.

The houses agree with this. The ninth house is the house of dharma, and in the natural zodiac it belongs to Jupiter. The tenth house is the house of karma, of work and standing and consequence, and in the natural zodiac it belongs to Saturn.

And each of them owns two signs. Jupiter owns Dhanu and Meena, Sagittarius and Pisces. Saturn owns Makar and Kumbh, Capricorn and Aquarius.

Now line those four signs up in order and look at where they sit in the body. This is the part that stopped me the first time somebody showed it to me properly.

04 · Where the Body Puts Them

Four Signs in a Row,
and All of Them One Limb.

In the Kalapurusha, the cosmic body laid over the zodiac, each sign holds a part. Read the ninth to the twelfth in sequence and watch what is being described.

09

Sagittarius · the thighs

Jupiter. The largest muscle in the body and the one that generates the push. Where the step begins.

10

Capricorn · the knees

Saturn. The joint that bends, that takes the load, that kneels, and that reminds you first how long you have been walking.

11

Aquarius · the shins and calves

Saturn again. Plain structural bone and working muscle. Nothing decorative about it. It simply holds and repeats.

12

Pisces · the feet

Jupiter again. The only part of you touching the ground, and the part every tradition asks you to place at a teacher's feet.

Four consecutive signs. One entire leg. And they are owned by exactly two planets, with no other graha getting a share of it. Jupiter takes the top and the bottom. Saturn takes the middle, the bending part and the load-bearing part.

05 · The Turn

Try Walking on
One of Them.

Stand up and lift one foot off the floor. You can hold that for a while. You can even hop, unsteadily, for a few metres. What you cannot do is walk.

Walking is not what most people think it is. It is not a series of stable positions. It is controlled falling. At every step you deliberately give up your balance, put your weight onto a leg that is not yet under you, and trust it to arrive in time. Then you do it again with the other one. A person walking is a person falling forward and being caught, over and over, for a lifetime.

That is what the two planets are doing.

Saturn is the leg already planted. What is actually true. Your age, your history, your obligations, the family you were born into, the money there is, the body you have, the years that have already gone. You cannot argue with it. You can only stand on it.

Jupiter is the leg lifting and reaching forward. What could be. The plan, the belief, the teacher you found, the direction you chose, the thing you have not earned yet and are moving toward anyway.

Neither one takes you anywhere alone. Fate without direction is standing still. Direction without fate is falling over. The step happens in the handover between them, and a life is just a very long series of those handovers.

06 · What Limping Looks Like

The Two Ways a Person
Goes Lopsided.

Strong Guru, weak Shani

All reach, no landing.

This is the person full of faith, plans, philosophy and genuine goodness who somehow never finishes anything. Every year has a new direction and every direction is sincere. They can tell you exactly why the work matters. They cannot tell you what happened to last year's version of it.

This is a tendency described by a chart, not a verdict on a person. Plenty of people with this configuration are disciplined and successful, usually because somewhere along the way they built the missing leg deliberately.

Strong Shani, weak Guru

All landing, nowhere to go.

This is the person who carries everything and enjoys none of it. Reliable, hard-working, the one the whole family leans on. Ask them what it is all for and you will get a long pause. The duty is enormous and the direction went missing years ago.

Again, a tendency and not a sentence. And I want to be plain about one thing: the tradition links Capricorn to the knees, but I do not read anybody's health from a chart and neither should anyone else. That link is a map of meaning, not a diagnosis.

07 · The Honest Answer

What This Model Does
and Does Not Prove.

Nothing here settles the philosophical question. I cannot show you that fate exists, and I would be careful with anyone who says they can.

What the tradition offers is a description, not a proof. Saturn and Jupiter owning the four signs of the leg is a striking piece of design, and it may be design, or it may be that the sign-to-body mapping and the planetary rulerships were built by the same minds and naturally rhyme. I cannot separate those two possibilities and I am not going to pretend the rhyme is evidence.

I also cannot tell you which leg is carrying more of your life right now. A chart shows the relative strength and condition of the two planets, which is real information, and it is still one input among several. The rest of it you already know from living in your own life.

What I will say is narrower. The image is useful. It replaces a debate that goes nowhere with a question you can actually answer about yourself, and that is worth more than winning the argument.

08 · What Actually Helps

Find the Weak Leg
and Give It Work.

You do not need a chart for the first part of this. Most people know which leg they favour the moment the question is put to them plainly.

01

Ask which one you blame

When something goes wrong, do you reach for circumstances or for your own effort? Whichever you reach for is usually the leg you are leaning on hardest.

02

Look at what you finished

Not what you started. Count the things actually completed in the last three years. A short list is a Saturn signal, whatever your intentions were.

03

Build the Saturn leg with repetition

Small, dull, daily, on time, whether or not you feel like it. Saturn is not built by big gestures. He is built by showing up on a Tuesday when nobody is watching.

04

Build the Jupiter leg with a teacher

Study something under somebody who knows more than you. Give away time or money without a return. Jupiter grows through learning and through generosity, and shrinks without both.

None of that requires a consultation. If you want to know which leg to work on, that conversation is short and you can have it with yourself this evening.

09 · What This Does Not Mean

Both Legs Can Be
Used as an Excuse.

Saturn gets used to justify sitting down. It was written, nothing could be done, what is the point. That is not fate. That is one leg refusing to move while the other one is perfectly functional.

Jupiter gets used the other way. Enough belief, enough positive thinking, enough faith, and the difficulty will lift. Sometimes it does not lift. Sometimes a person does everything right and the year still takes something from them, and telling that person they lacked faith is a cruelty dressed up as a teaching.

The model is not a comfort and it is not a scolding. It only says that a life moves the way a body moves, and that both legs have to take their turn.

If You Know Which Leg

Bring the Chart.

A consultation looks at where Shani and Guru actually sit for you, which of them is carrying the weight at this point in your life, and what the coming years are likely to ask of each. Often the finding is simply that the leg you have been neglecting is the one to work on, and that you suspected as much already.
