Visualise the abundance and it arrives. Pleasant for a fortnight. It has nothing to say to a person whose problem is the cost of their loan.
Vastu Shastra; Practice
Before You Chase
the Money.
Three zones of a home are linked in this tradition to money coming in, money moving, and money kept. Here is what each one asks you to change, what the corrections cost, and an honest account of what a corner of a house can and cannot do for your income.
01 · The Situation
The Month That Is Four Days
Too Long.
Money trouble is rarely dramatic. It is a specific, ordinary, repeating feeling. The twenty-sixth of the month arrives and there are still five days to cover. A payment goes out and you check the balance twice, as though it might have changed between glances. Work comes in and somehow leaves nothing behind.
The thing that wears people down is not poverty exactly. It is the sense that money passes through the house without stopping.
Vastu has a great deal to say about this, and much of what gets said in its name is dishonest. There is an entire industry built on telling anxious people that a pyramid, a crystal, or a fifty thousand rupee ritual will change their finances.
What follows is the part of the tradition I actually use, with the price of every correction stated. Nothing in it costs more than a can of paint, and I will be plain about what I can and cannot claim for any of it.
02 · The Explanations on Offer
Three Things People
Will Tell You.
Sometimes correct. Also the standard answer given to people already working two jobs, which is why it lands as an insult more often than as advice.
Is there anything in the environment worth checking first, given that checking is free and the corrections run to a few hundred rupees?
03 · First, the Arithmetic
What Actually Moves Money
in a Household.
Before any of the rest of it. What income comes in, what goes out, what a debt is costing you every month, and whether the work you do is priced anywhere near what it is worth. Those four things account for most of what happens to money in most households, and none of them live in a corner of a room.
If a loan is quietly eating a third of your earnings, or you have not raised your rates in five years, that is where the answer is. A blue piggy bank will not touch it, and I am not going to suggest otherwise.
I want to say one more thing before the practical section, because this is the subject where people get hurt. If money is genuinely tight, do not spend on remedies. Everything recommended below costs tape, paint, a small stone or a sheet of paper. If any practitioner, including one who sounds far more confident than I do, tells you your finances require an expensive gemstone or a large ceremony, they are describing their income and not yours.
With that said, here is what the tradition asks you to look at, and it is genuinely worth an afternoon.
04 · The Three Zones
Coming In, Moving,
and Being Kept.
One practical note before you start. Get north right, because this is where most self-audits fail. A phone compass held near a steel almirah, a fridge or a reinforced concrete column will lie to you. Take three readings from different spots and use the one they agree on.
Money and opportunity. The water zone.
The north carries the water element, and the tradition places three energy fields here: Bhudhar, read as the power of manifestation, Bhallat as the power of abundance, and Soma as the treasure itself. Taken together this is the zone of income and of opportunity arriving.
Four things are read as disturbing it. Red on the walls or furnishings, a toilet, a dustbin, and a gas burner.
The corrections are all small. Replace red surfaces with off-white or cream. Move the dustbin out of this zone entirely, which is free. Where there is a toilet, lay a four-inch band of blue tape on the floor along three sides of the seat. Under a gas burner, place a slab of Baroda green stone.
Plenty of homes have a red north wall and perfectly healthy finances. This is worth attention when it sits alongside a difficulty someone already has, not on its own, and I cannot demonstrate that the wall is doing anything.
Cash flow. The fire zone.
The south-east is the seat of fire, and the fields the tradition places here are read as forces of ignition and momentum: Savita the igniter, Savitra the pusher, Anil the uplifter, and Akash as inner space. Where the north governs money arriving, this zone governs money moving.
Three things are read as weakening it. Blue, because it carries water and water puts out fire. A toilet. And a dustbin.
Replace blue surfaces with off-white or cream. Move the dustbin. For a toilet, a four-inch band of red tape along three sides of the seat.
Notice that the colour instruction here is the exact opposite of the one in the north. That is not an error, and it is a good illustration of why these zones need to be read individually rather than as one general rule about good and bad colours.
Gains and profit. The space zone.
The west carries the space element, with Mita read as the motivator, Pushpadant as the assisting power, and Varun as the observational power. This is the zone the tradition associates with gains and with profit, meaning what is left after the work is done rather than what came in.
Four disturbances are named. Green, a toilet, a gas burner, and a dustbin.
Replace green with off-white or cream. Move the dustbin. For a toilet, a four-inch band of white tape along three sides of the seat.
The three zones map onto three different money questions, and it is worth knowing which one is actually yours. Plenty of people earn well and keep nothing, which is a west question rather than a north one.
05 · After the Correction
Four Practices,
and What Each One Does.
Each of these is placed after the zone has been balanced, not instead of it. I have marked the two that also work for reasons anybody can verify, because I would rather you knew which is which.
North · the blue piggy bank
Put small amounts in regularly. This one I can vouch for on ordinary grounds as well: a visible daily saving habit is the most reliable way an ordinary household accumulates anything, and it works whether or not you accept the tradition around it.
South-east · the copper swastik
Placed in the balanced zone, held in this tradition to clear obstructions in cash flow and support a reserve. This one rests on the tradition alone and I will not dress it up as anything else.
West · the written list
White paper, black ink, each wish written in the present tense as though already achieved. Worth knowing: writing goals down in specific terms is well documented as making people more likely to act on them. That effect is real, and it is not the one usually advertised.
Everywhere · clear the clutter
Living room, kitchen, balconies, window sills, the spare room, the storage. This is the most defensible instruction in the whole tradition, because a household that can find things, sees what it owns, and is not paying to store what it does not use simply handles money better.
06 · The Honest Answer
What I Can and Cannot
Show You.
I cannot tell you that a corner of your home is why money is tight, and on this subject that claim does more damage than on almost any other.
There is no study measuring household income against the colour of a north wall. What exists is a long tradition with internally consistent rules, and one practitioner's experience across a lot of homes. Both are real. Both are much smaller things than evidence.
I also cannot separate the readings. When someone corrects a zone and something improves in the months after, at least three explanations are available: the correction did something, or the person who decides to sort out their house is often the same person who has just decided to sort out their spending, or the bad stretch was ending anyway and we have joined two events because they happened close together. The middle one is real, well understood, and never the one that gets advertised.
What I will say is narrower. These checks are free, the corrections cost a few hundred rupees, and they undo in ten minutes. That is the entire case for doing them, and it does not need to be more than that.
07 · What This Does Not Mean
Never Spend Money You
Are Short Of.
Everything in section four costs tape and paint. If someone has quoted you thousands for a money remedy, the quote is the problem.
Nor is any of this a substitute for advice about debt. If a loan or a card is the actual weight, the people to speak to are the ones who deal in numbers, and speaking to them early is worth more than everything on this page combined. I work with homes and charts. I am not a financial adviser and this is not financial advice.
And do not read a difficult year as a verdict on you. Businesses have bad quarters, industries turn, illnesses and family obligations arrive without notice. A hard stretch is usually a hard stretch, not a judgement, and telling someone their finances reflect their inner state is a cruelty dressed up as a teaching.
Check the corners because it is cheap and quick. Then go back to the arithmetic, which is where most of the answer has been the whole time.
If You Want a Second Pair of Eyes
Bring the Plan.
A thirty-minute diagnostic reads your plan against your chart and tells you whether there is a condition worth correcting, in what order, and often that there is not. What it will not do is promise you an income figure, and you should leave any consultation where somebody does.
Astro-Vastu is offered for insight and planning. It is not medical, psychological, legal or financial advice, and nothing here should be read as a claim about anyone's health or relationships. Individual circumstances vary and no specific outcome is promised or guaranteed.
